Kay Black
I have been taking martial arts since I was 11 years old. My experience has included Wado-Ryu, Iai-Do, Goju-ryu in which I received a black belt, Aikido, Kenpo, and since 1999 Songahm Taekwondo. I was introduced to the American Taekwondo Association when my oldest son, Jerri, and a friend took a two week trial lesson from our instructor, 5th degree black belt Mr. Jeff Hockman of Columbia, MO. I had not taken a martial art in a number of years at that point and was in college to earn my Masters in Physical Therapy degree, but I had missed the overall body workout and memorization of the martial arts. My youngest son and I watched the first lesson and I asked some questions about the American Taekwondo Association. When I found out more about the ATA including its philosophy and organization, we joined the very next lesson. I knew at that point that as long as I am able I will continue.

During this time, I have had the privilege of going to numerous workshops and 2 Black Belt camps along with every World Championships since 2000 in Little Rock, AR, and have enjoyed every moment of it. I was the 2001 State Champ in forms, sparring, and weapons, 2003 State Champ in sparring, and tied for State Champ in 2004 in my division. I am currently a 2nd degree black belt and have been a certified instructor with the ATA since 2004. When we moved to the lake in 2002 is when Overcomers ATA began. We continue to receive instruction from Mr. Hockman in Columbia. My commitment is to educate my students and myself in the lifeskills of Taekwondo, to empower each student I meet to reach toward their goals and achieve personal victory at each step along the way, and to promote excellence as we continue to reach toward our goals in life. Thus the name of the school: "Overcomers ATA".
